New Year's Day Recovery Party

Join MAX on 01/01/01 to recover from your New Year's Eve festivities - no matter what they might have been. We want everyone - from the migraine packing party animals to the genteel suburbanites who couldn't quite stay awake until midnight - to watch reruns of the well-pickled Dick Clark posing in Times Square. Let's get together over cocktails and a snacky brunch buffet. Please note that discussions of New Year's Resolutions are strictly forbidden. The festivities will be at Rick Sneed's, 577 27th Street #1, near Castro and 27th. Make your reservation online. Members $15, non-members $25.

Monday, January 15, 7:30PM
Gay Author Book Club

The title of the book is "Queer Fear" - Gay Horror fiction with 18 short stories. The book costs $16.95 at Books Inc. on  Market Street or Different Light Books on Castro. The meeting place for this month will be the Java Source Coffee House, 345 Clement Street between 4th and 5th Avenues in San Francisco. This is an old, large coffee house with reasonable prices, interesting character, and a lot of chairs! We will meet in the back of the shop and you should be able to recognize us. We really do start on time and go until about 9:30, but you can come late if you must. You need not buy the book or read it to attend the meeting. For more information contact Bill Serbin or Richard Radandt.

Dive Dining at Gombei's

If you like Japanese food and have ever been to Japan to see how things are really done, you will like this place. It's too clean and well run to be a dive but you will feel right at home anyway. They feature all the basic Japanese fare except sushi (although they do have sashimi specials every so often). Combination plates are typically served with miso soup and tofu - try the mackerel or chicken/beef yakinuku for a change of pace. The donburi here is good as well as Udon noodles for a warm up in winter. Gombei's is at 193 East Jackson Street, San Jose. Call Blair Cambra at 408-473-2205 to reserve your place at the table.

Exquisitely crafted objects, clothing, and a furnished throne room shed light on the public and private lives of all-powerful emperors. Tickets are $13.00 (Members) / $23.00 (Guests).
