Help Is On The Way: VI

This year, the Richmond/Ermet Aids Foundation will be producing their very popular Help Is On The Way on two evenings, July 31 and August 1. Featuring the music of Cole Porter, this year's performances are again at the Palace of Fine Arts, with stars such as Rita Moreno, Jill Eikenberry, Paula West, our favorite Grand Diva Miss Carole Cook and many more. On Monday is the grand gala with the huge pre-show party and auction. Tuesday has a party afterwards where you can mingle with the cast. We have the station wagon all packed up and we're heading to Guerneville for this August weekend. The boys at Fife's are saying hello to MAX and we have reserved several rooms for you to frolic amongst the Redwoods. This is always a sell out so don't let us give away your room for the biggest event of the summer. Call Mike Barsul at  331.1850 to make your reservation. Price includes room, day use of the whole resort, pool and beach, welcome cocktail reception Friday night, pool party on Saturday with a Texas BBQ supper followed by dancing at the bunkhouse with drink coupons. Cost per person double occupancy is $125 members and $150 guests.

Tour the Paramount Theatre and Lunch

MAXEast will be sponsoring a private tour of the historic Paramount Theatre of the Arts in Oakland. It is of the finest remaining examples of Art Deco design in the United States. The private two-hour tour will give us a behind-the-scenes look. Prior to the tour of the Paramount, we'll have lunch at Vo's Restaurant, right around the corner from the theatre. This will be a family-style luncheon with several entrees, including soup, several entrees, rice, and dessert. MAX members can attend the luncheon and private tour for $22, and non-members may join us for $32. Space is limited so make your reservations early!

Volunteer Appreciation Party

It's time to reward our volunteers again. Our first appreciation party was on April 15 and it was a lot of fun. The 1999-2000 MAX Board of Directors is hosting the traditional volunteer party on Wednesday, August 9. Under the leadership of Mike Barsul, vice-chair of administration and programming, this annual event promises to be grand. Volunteers will be receiving invitations during the month of July.

Elections for 2000-2001 Board of Directors

Do you want to be part of a great team? Do you have organizational skills that can benefit MAX? Are you looking for a way to meet people? Why not consider serving on the MAX Board of Directors?

The Board of Directors is a governing body that manages the ongoing operations of this volunteer organization. The Board is composed of the Chairman, four Vice-Chairmen and nine Directors, each with a specific area of responsibility. It meets monthly to review MAX's fiscal operations and financial status, review recent events and plan future activities. Board members also participate in two or three planning retreats.

The MAXSouth Bay dive group will be revisiting Wing's Chinese Restaurant this month. If you haven't attended one of our dining dives you are sure to have a great time visiting these great eateries with us! In Love with Shakespeare?

Join MAXEast for academy-award winning playwright Tom Stoppard's ("Shakespeare in Love") comedy "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern are Dead" at the Orinda Shakespeare Festival. Mark your calendars for the 2:00PM performance. Join MAXers from throughout the Bay Area at one of the best known Shakespeare festivals in the country. Tickets are extremely limited, so please book early. The member price is $35, non-members $45. If there is enough interest, an informal group dinner will follow the event. An Afternoon in Austria-Hungary

Explore the history, culture and cuisine of Austria-Hungary at a San Francisco mansion. Starting with sachertorte, linzertorte and other Austrian sweets accompanied by mineral waters and teas, we will hear presentations on "The Decorative Arts in Austria-Hungary around 1900", "The Queer Case of Colonel  Redl", "Radical Music in the Last Days of the Old Empire", "Some Juicy Gossip from the Hapsburg Court" and "The Wines of Hungary, Monrovia and Croatia". TASTE at Millennium

Join MAX as we experience a gourmet vegetarian feast. In response to recent survey requests for a vegetarian TASTE event, the award winning Millennium restaurant (246 McAllister St.), was deemed to be the best choice. We'll meet for cocktails and herbal elixirs at 6:30pm, then savor selections from the Millennium cookbook. Choose an Appetizer of Warm Spinach Salad, Plantain Torte or Grilled Yellowfin Potatoes. Entree choices are asian-style Napoleon of mushroom, eggplant and tofu in a sesame sauce, or Huitlacoche polenta roulade, or Morel stuffed sweet onion with seitan sausage, or pasta du jour. We will then choose among Millennium's decadent desserts. The all-inclusive dinner with one glass of house wine is only $42 members/ $52 guests.
