A Gay Social Organization

MAX(Men's Associated Exchange) is a membership-supported fraternal organization. Our mission is to provide a fun, open, diverse and welcoming community for gay men via social and philanthropic events. Through active participation in MAX, members embrace fellowship, leadership, personal growth and community involvement, fostering a positive gay image for all.

MAX is non-partisan, non-profit and membership-supported. MAX has more than 500 dues paying members, making it one of the largest gay social organizations in the country. An equal number of friends and guests participate in MAX events on a regular basis. Membership dues entitle members access to all MAX functions, discounts on most MAX activities and a weekly activity update called MAXmail.

 

Events and Activities

Each month, MAX stages 10 to 15 social events and activities that draw from 25 to 400 members and guests. These range from potluck dinners and cultural events to international trips and personal development seminars. MAX has something for everyone! Past activities include a walking tour of Russian Hill to see sites from "Tales of the City," a night at the theater with "Tap Dogs," the annual Thanksgiving Weekend trip to Mendocino and a forum on gay parenting. MAX is probably best known for our MAX TGIF cocktail parties, held most Fridays of each month, either in San Francisco, in the South Bay, or in the East Bay. MAX TGIFs attract members and guests for cocktails, canapes and conversation. The quality and variety of MAX activities are the direct result of our members' efforts and imagination. Each activity is planned and coordinated by MAX members for MAX members and their guests, under the direction of various committees. MAX is fully membership-supported... and there's always something new happening.


MAX Committees

The foundation of MAX rests on its committees whose members develop activities and keep the organization running smoothly. Check out the committee descriptions from the links at the left of this page to learn more about MAX and what we do, and to find out how you might participate as a MAX member. Being on a committee is a great way to meet other members and become a part of MAX.


Administration

MAX is administered by a Board of Directors elected each September for a one-year term. Each director serves as chairman of a MAX standing committee. The Board meets one evening each month. The major force behind MAX is the members who serve on the standing and special committees. Committee responsibilities include brainstorming event ideas, scheduling on the MAX calendar, planning, coordination and reporting. Each event is chaired by an individual committee member (known as the event champion) with the assistance of other committee members. Early each year, MAX hosts a general membership meeting to review the upcoming year and organization's budget. MAX highly values its volunteers and hosts Volunteer Appreciation Nights where committee members are invited to a "thank you" cocktail party.
