Our MAX Angels in Heavenly Palm Springs

MAXsports and the MAX Angels softball team are planning a trip to Palm Springs for the Martin Luther King weekend of January 18 - 20. We're there to watch several gay softball leagues play in a tournament, and to support and cheer on our own MAX Angels! Transportation plans are made individually.

We have reserved all 24 rooms at the newly renovated Warm Sands Villas hotel on Friday and Saturday nights so MAX members and softball team members can all stay in the same place. There will be a no-host welcome cocktail party at a local bar on Friday evening. The Villa has a pool, complimentary continental breakfast, and large grounds. There will be a BBQ party at the Villa for everyone Saturday evening which will include live entertainment.

There will be a charge for the BBQ, including a nominal surcharge to help support our MAX Angels throughout the year. Rooms vary from double to quadruple occupancy and are priced from $99.50 to $149.50 per night accordingly. Call Kai Brothers at  775-9062 or Rob Evans at  826-8950 for more information and to get your name on the signup list. The last time this event was held it was a sellout, and rooms will go on a first come first served basis, so act now! Reservations and deposits for a room are made individually by calling the hotel directly at 800-357-5695. Please mention you are with the MAX softball group. For more information on the villas, visit: www.warmsandsvillas.com.

Beer and Brainstorming

At MAXforum events we (1) have a great time, and (2) we learn stuff. So what would you like to learn about? Bathhouse etiquette? How to buy a house? Fifty ways to meet your lover? Gay spirituality? How to do drag? Bring your ideas to the first MAXforum committee meeting of 2002. In exchange, you'll enjoy some lively conversation and, perhaps most importantly, beer! You don't have to join anything, but you may discover something you would like to do through MAXforum. We'll convene at Dan Epp's place in the Castro and later continue the conversation at the pubs. Please contact Dan at (415) 503-0455 if you plan to come.

Friday-Sunday, January 25-27
Bear Valley Winter Weekend

MAX Mountain Men!! Who says all gay men are sissies- we're gonna explore the Sierra Nevada in winter on snowshoes! Our professional guide will teach the basics of snowshoeing, avalanche awareness, and point out interesting facts of winter ecology as we "snow-hike" our way through the greater Mt. Reba area near Bear Valley. Sixteen of us will stay at the rustic mountain lodge base camp located in the town of Bear Valley that features both a restaurant and a small pub. The January 25-27 weekend package includes two nights at Base Camp Lodge (4-man rooms with twin and double bed accommodations on a first-come first-served basis, and bathrooms on each floor of the lodge), breakfast on both Saturday and Sunday, box lunch during our hike, and Saturday evening dinner. The cost is $190 for MAXmembers and $225 for MAXguests. Contact Thad Kellam at  482-5294 to reserve your spot right away.

Gay Comedy Afternoon featuring Margaret Cho

A Saturday afternoon of gay comedy at MAXer Marc Paruta's. Come see 3 videos of great gay stand-up comedy while munching on hot buttered popcorn. The highlight of the afternoon will feature the full length video of Margaret's One-Woman-Show, "I'm the one that I want." Margaret Cho is a home town girl, born and raised in San Francisco. Her childhood growing up in a Korean American family in the San Francisco melting pot, and attending school on Haight Street during the 70's hippie movement is the source for her unique comedy style and has made her a favorite of Bay Area audiences, both straight and gay. The fee will pay for drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and plenty of hot-buttered popcorn. Call Marc to reserve at  624-1808 or  219-5981. Members $15 / Guests $20.
