Deep In a Dream at the Castro Theater
"Deep In a Dream: The Long Night of Chet
Baker", an autobiography by James Gavin. This promotion event is a
two-set performance piece, and includes the reading of passages from the
book, interwoven with live music well associated with Baker. This Castro
Theater event will involve the readings from the book, the music, and
the U.S. premiere of a 10-minute film of one of Chet's final
performances, filmed in an intimate cabaret in Paris. An optional
meet-and-greet gala reception will follow the performance at the theater
for approximately 200 attendees. Award-winning Chicago jazz vocalist
Spider Saloff will perform vocals for the event, backed by a jazz trio
featuring Ken Muir at the piano. There will probably be one or two
celebrity readers such as Barbara Rush, Rita Moreno, Clint Eastwood,
Armistead Maupin, Chris Isaak. This is a highly publicized, quite
prestigious and very cool event. Spider Saloff has a great following in
San Francisco, and within that, a strong gay following fostered through
her work with benefit concerts for various organizations who help
support education and the fight against HIV/AIDS. $25 event/$50 includes
gala reception, Member price. $35 event/$65 includes gala reception
Guest price. Buy your ticket

Giving Back III with Julie Newmar Screening
General Admission: $25.00 - Members / Guests Screening Reserved Seats
& Reception: $75.00 - Members / Guests Champion: Robert Sokol / 865-3650 /
Drag queens, gay singers, popcorn and a gen-u-ine movie star at the
Castro Theatre... what more could you ask for in a charity benefit
supporting the AIDS Emergency Fund and SFGMC? This fun-filled evening
will include a brief performance by the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus,
an on-stage appearance by Julie Newmar and a screening of the gay comedy
classic "To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything! Julie Newmar" starring
Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze, John Leguizamo, Stockard Channing, Blythe
Danner and, in a cameo appearance, Newmar herself! And for more time
with Julie, join us at the post-screening reception at a fabulous Castro
boite to be named! Newmar, sister of MAX's own John Newmeyer, has a film
career spanning fifty years and includes early roles in such classic
musicals as "The Band Wagon" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers." On
Broadway she won a Tony Award for "The Marriage-Go-Round" and appeared
in the musicals "Silk Stockings" and later in "Li'l Abner" - as the
aptly named Stupefyin' Jones. Her television credits are extensive,
capped of course by creating the purr-fectly perfect signature role of
Catwoman in the "Batman" series of
the '60s. SFGMC is the longest continuously performing gay men's chorus
in the world. GIVING BACK, the third in a series of charity events
produced by the SFGMC to give something back to its Bay Area home
community, kicks off their 25th season, which will culminate in November
2003, with a gala celebration at Davies Symphony Hall.
The AIDS Emergency Fund, co-beneficiary of the evening and famous for
its "Every Penny Counts" campaign, marks twenty years of providing
emergency financial assistance over $20 million to date - to Bay Area
residents living with HIV.
For tickets, call the SFGMC office at 865-3650, visit
www.sfgmc.org or stop by the SFGMC
office at 4053 18th Street in the heart of the Castro!
